OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z Review: They Finally Did It!

Updated: Jun 20, 2020

Hello Everybody!

It's been a long time since I last wrote a post, mainly because I was on a break.. So meanwhile a lot of stuff has happened... Global Crisis of the COVID-19 has led to many changes and affected many tech events such as MWC, IFA, Google I/O...

OnePlus gave us a nice surprise by launching the OnePlus 8 series, the 8 Pro finally being the true Flagship and alongside the phones, they released a new accessory, the Bullets Wireless Z.

Now this is definitely not their first attempt at making a wireless earphones, they did launch the Bullets Wireless and the Bullets Wireless 2 earlier... which were honestly, trash in terms of price compared to the sound quality they gave. So what's new in this pair? Let's check it out!

Design and Build Quality

The Wireless Z right out of the box comes with a familiar design of the bullets wireless 2. Amazing.

It has a soft rubber and works great as a neck band, it is well balanced so your mic portion doesn't hang on one side. Also the earbuds are themselves great. They include 3 ear tips out of the box and they are pretty comfortable. I could wear for hours and not get fatigued anytime soon.

Plus they are durable and they snap magnetically when not in use. Which is just... Satisfying. And since the buds are Sweat-proof, a few splashes or intense workouts won't bother them.

Features

So coming to the next part, the features.. The Wireless Z earphones come with a host of features which made the original Bullets Wireless and 2 stand out.

The Earphones have a quick-switch button on the other side of the band so if you have 2 devices connected, pressing the button will instantly switch to the other device, which is neat.

The Quick Switch Button

The Magnets are not just for show though, as soon as you snap the buds, the music gets paused automatically and the earbuds switch off. Unsnap and connect them again, then they play music back where you left off (This part strangely works only on OnePlus Phones) and instantly connect back again.

The Bluetooth range is excellent thanks to Bluetooth 5.0, I could leave my phone to charge and wander around the next room with the earphones connected without any issues.

There is also the low latency mode which makes games like PUBG more playable, unfortunately I couldn't test out this feature since it works only in FNATIC mode on OnePlus 6T and later.

With my K20 connected though, there was definitely much improved latency then other devices out there. I never encountered any lip syncing issues when playing back videos.

Sound Quality

So here's the main part of the review. How does it sound? To be honest.. it sounds... Great!

The high tones and the mid tones were very well produced, and the vocals were loud and clear. I could easily make out the instruments that were playing in the background. But there was one downside... the bass was just good.. not Great.. I mean the bass is definitely there and you can feel it but if you're a Basshead and have listened to the JBLs and the Beats of all time, then you'll be a little bit disappointed.

The earphones have a passive noise cancellation system that is it works on the principle of noise isolation rather than active noise cancellation which is available on some TWS buds like the Airpods Pro, but hey we're not talking about some super expensive earphones right?

The isolation is great and above 50% volume I basically couldn't hear anything apart some loud noises so for flights it should be great.

The microphone quality is also good and the third party never complained when I took calls.

Battery Life

This has t be easily the best part of the review. The battery life is just... Nuts...

I mean.. seriously the earphones have 20 hours of claimed battery life and I just felt that this earphones never died. It could easily last for 3-4 days without a hitch (on and off of course 2 hours of movies some 30 minute phone calls and An hour or so of music playback) and thanks to WarpCharge 30 support, it can easily charge in just 10 minutes up to almost 50% so you don't need to worry about battery life at all.

Verdict

At INR 1999 ($26) the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z do seem to be a great deal. It's superior build quality, long battery life and a handful of features make it a compelling option, if you are OK with the little less bass than the typical wireless earphones like JBL.
